RODA Gyroscope

I designed the RODA Gyroscope to help display some of the unintuitive physics of devices in rotation. Gyroscopes have been around for a long time, they use a spinning wheel and a housing to show off some mind boggling physics. They seemingly defy gravity by balancing on a pen, or a finger. There's a lot of science going on behind a gyroscope. Even a hundred years after they came to market, they can still surprise and delight.

I wanted to add new features to this timeless desk toy. Expanding its capabilities and creating a gyroscope that would fascinate and educate. I dove into my old physics textbooks, emailed my old Master’s Program Dynamics professor, and came up with the design for a new generation of gyroscopes.

Precision CNC manufactured out of a polished brass wheel and aerospace grade aluminum, the RODA is built to last a lifetime. The novel design features that made the RODA unique resulted in a patent being granted in 2021. RODA has raised six figures in revenue, with over a thousand units manufactured to date.

Head Spinning Ideas

I launched the RODA using the popular crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter. The project raised over $100,000 USD in the first month, and went into mass production in 2020.
